CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Chiropractic care is a manual therapy aimed at diagnosing, treating, and preventing disorders related to the musculoskeletal system and their effects on the nervous system. The primary goal of chiropractic treatment is to enhance joint mobility, nerve conduction, and coordinated movement of the spinal column. This helps to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and improve nervous system function.
WHAT IS MANUAL THERAPY?
Manual therapy involves the application of controlled, precise forces to specific areas of the spine and musculoskeletal system. These high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) adjustments can positively impact the body and nervous system, resulting in improved nerve function and communication between the nervous system and the body.
BENEFITS OF HVLA ADJUSTMENTS
-
Muscle Relaxation & Increased Range of Motion: HVLA adjustments can cause the surrounding muscles to relax, reducing muscle tension and increasing joint mobility.
-
Improved Nervous System Function: Correcting hypomobilities (areas with decreased range of motion) within joints enhances nervous system function, allowing it to transmit signals more effectively.
-
Addressing Hypomobile Joints: Hypomobile joints can exert abnormal pressure on nerves, impairing the body’s ability to transmit messages properly, leading to pain and inflammation. HVLA adjustments relieve this pressure, restore joint mobility, and improve communication between the nervous system and the body.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During a chiropractic session, joints are palpated and checked for proper range of motion, a process known as motion palpation. Once an area of hypomobility is identified, an HVLA adjustment is performed to correct it. The joint is then re-evaluated to assess the response to the adjustment. Most horses enjoy chiropractic manipulation and are relaxed throughout their appointment, which typically lasts around 30 minutes. Sedation is neither recommended nor required.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
-
Young, Healthy Horses: Chiropractic care ensures their bodies are set up for success, addressing areas of concern before they develop into chronic issues.
-
Athletes: Chiropractic helps maintain high-level body function, ensuring proper musculoskeletal alignment and nerve conduction for optimal performance.
-
Aging Horses: Chiropractic care ensures that the aging body can function and communicate effectively, maximizing comfort and alleviating pain from chronic conditions.
Chiropractic care is beneficial for horses of all ages and disciplines, contributing to their overall health and performance.
